A Giant Flamingo At Tampa International Airport — See It Here

A Giant Flamingo Is Taking Over Tampa International Airport

The Main Terminal’s giant pink sculpture is located in the center of the terminal. The sculpture, titled “HOME,” a giant flamingo at Tampa International Airport is 21 feet tall and created by artist Matthew Mazzotta.
A giant flamingo has taken over Tampa International Airport, greeting visitors with a pink art installation sure to brighten anyone’s day.

The 21-foot, floor-to-ceiling sculpture is the latest addition to the airport’s public art program, which includes commissions for photographs and sculptures paintings, and more. When the art program is finished in late April or early May, visitors will be able to interact with the giant flamingo, as it is designed to be touched and become a completely immersive piece.

The 21-foot-tall art installment depicting a giant flamingo at Tampa international airport dipping its head underwater will be completed by late April or early May.

When travelers pass through an airport, art is usually the last thing on their minds. The main concerns are getting through security in a fair period, double-checking your gate number, and not missing your flight. Tampa International Airport, on the other hand, wants passengers to experience more than just travel anxiety.

The sculpture, “HOME,” by artist Matthew Mazzotta, was chosen from one of more than 700 art proposals submitted.

In a statement, Chris Minner, executive vice president of marketing and communications at Tampa International Airport and a member of the airport’s public art committee, said, “Tampa International Airport has always been a champion of iconic public art as a way to welcome our visitors and give them a sense of wonder and whimsy when they arrive in our beautiful region.” “We’re confident that ‘Home’ will assist guests of all ages to make memories and be inspired as they begin and conclude their travel experiences at TPA.”

“Every airport has its terminals, its gates, its travelers, but how it feels during that experience is what makes the airport different.” Construction started last week, but as of now, airport visitors can see the Flamingo’s head, neck, and legs, as the rest of it comes together.

When completed, the sculpture will portray a gigantic bird sinking its head beneath the water’s surface, with metal panels and lighting affixed to the ceiling creating the illusion. As a result, guests will be transported underwater with the flamingo.

With larger-than-life exhibits welcoming visitors, art is rapidly becoming a part of airport terminals throughout the world. The new Terminal B at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, for example, has glass sculptures and pieces that honor New York City’s graffiti past.

Beyond airports, inspiring public art can be found all over the world, including in the mural-rich area of Wynwood in Miami, Florida, and in Philadelphia, which has one of the country’s greatest collections, including the popular “Love” sculpture.

When completed, the sculpture is supposed to make visitors feel like they have taken a step underwater. Metal panels will hang from the ceiling and are meant to simulate the glitter of water and further highlight the flamingo’s bright pink feathers.

The coolest part of this big bird in the middle of the airport? Once it’s finished, the public will be able to interact with it. Never again will showing up early to a flight at the Tampa International Airport be boring.

The piece of art will be located in the main terminal, near the Shoppes at Bayshore, as visitors pass through.

The sculpture is one of seven new art commissions approved by the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board on Thursday as part of a public art program designed to enhance and beautify TPA’s new facilities.

For now, “Home” is incomplete and surrounded by a yellow barrier as it awaits the final piece of the sculpture.
