9 Best Waterfalls In The US
As spring blooms get closer and snowpack’s start to melt, we’re entering what many nature lovers say is their favorite time of year: waterfall season. Every waterfall has its own character, from roaring cascades to quiet trickles straight out of a fairy tale.
Some are skinny and tall, and they fall off of steep cliffs into whirling pools below. Some are more open and spread out over rock and moss stairs. When some falls are frozen solid in winter, you can walk behind them and climb on others.
You may have already seen some of America’s most famous waterfalls, like Niagara, Yosemite, and Havasu in the Grand Canyon. From New York to Alaska, these cascades deserve a detour.
Here are 9 most beautiful waterfalls in the US that are worth stopping at on your next road trip.
1. Havasu Falls, Arizona
Havasu Falls is one of the most beautiful places in the world, in part because it is so far away. It is in Havasu Canyon, on land that is managed by the Havasupai Tribe. One of the best waterfalls in the US.
Even though it’s not easy to get there, the beauty of the falls is hard to beat. This Arizona waterfall is well worth the extra effort, with its red rock, white falling water, and blue-green pool.
2. Palouse Falls in Washtucna, Washington
The best part of the 94-acre Palouse Falls State Park in southeast Washington is where the Palouse River crashes over a ledge and into an Ice Age gorge carved out of columnar basalt. Palouse Falls in Washtucna is one of the top waterfalls in the US.
It’s a 200-foot drop that makes clouds of mist blow past its sheer rock walls, like something from Jurassic Park. Even though COVID-19 has closed the campgrounds for the time being, visitors can choose from three different viewpoints, one of which is a paved interpretive path that is ADA-friendly.
3. Nugget Falls in Juneau, Alaska
One of the most popular places to visit in Juneau is the dramatic Nugget Falls. It is on the eastern edge of Mendenhall Lake, right next to the blue-colored Mendenhall Glacier. To get there, take the 1.6-mile loop trail just past the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.
The trail goes through a rock gorge and ends at the base of the falls, which crash down a 377-foot rock face. Bring binoculars on the hike and keep an eye out for Arctic terns, mountain goats, and black bear paw prints along the way.
4. Rainbow Falls in Watkins Glen State Park, New York
There are many beautiful waterfalls in the Finger Lakes area, but Watkins Glen State Park looks like it was taken from Lord of the Rings. The glen has four trails, 19 waterfalls, an ecology path, a lily pond, and a suspension bridge that is 151 years old.
For a three-mile workout, go in through the South Entrance, climb the 120-step fern-covered Couch’s Staircase, go behind the curtain of water at Cavern Cascade, climb the 180-step Jacob’s Ladder, and walk back along the North Rim Trail with a view of the gorge.
Don’t miss Rainbow Falls, which got its name from the way the sun breaks up when it hits the water just right, or Central Cascade, which is the tallest fall in the park at 60 feet. One of the best waterfalls in the US.
5. Shoshone Falls in Twin Falls, Idaho
This Snake River gusher is called the “Niagara of the West” because it is wider and taller than the real Niagara Falls (212 feet) (900 feet). That makes it one of the largest natural falls in the country, and people have been coming to see it since the Oregon Trail days.
Normal flow is between 10,000 and 12,000 cubic feet per second, but after a harsh winter with a lot of snow, meltwater can reach up to 20,000 cubic feet per second.
The best time to go is usually in the spring, but people should always check the Shoshone Falls live feed before they leave. One of the best waterfalls in America.
6. St. Louis Canyon Falls at Starved Rock State Park, Illinois
Starved Rock State Park is perfect for people who love waterfalls. It is in the middle of cornfields and is only two hours southwest of Chicago. The 18 sandstone canyons in the 2,800-acre park were made by melting glaciers.
Every spring, waterfalls pour out of them and bring the park to life. This is a place with 14 miles of hiking trails where you can choose your own adventure: You can walk behind the 25-foot curtain of LaSalle Waterfall, look at the 60-foot double falls in Tonty Canyon, or look at the park’s two 80-foot falls, one in St. Louis Canyon and the other in Wildcat Canyon.
Want to try something new? Plan to go to the park in the winter, when experienced ice climbers can climb up three of its most famous waterfalls.
7. Burney Falls in Redding, California
Burney Falls is a 129-foot waterfall in Northern California’s McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. It was named the “Eighth Wonder of the World” by President Theodore Roosevelt Jr.
When you see that it pumps 100 million gallons of water from a spring every day, you’ll understand why: Burney is not only pretty, but it is also easy to get to. Travelers can walk a quarter-mile path to the base of the waterfall or take the one-mile Burney Falls Loop Trail to see it from different angles.
If you like what you see, set aside a few hours to explore the many other falls in the area. Potem Falls, which drops 70 feet into a deep swimming hole, and McCloud Falls, which has three levels, are both in the beautiful Shasta-Trinity National Forest.
8. Dry Falls near Highlands, North Carolina
Mountain Waters Scenic Byway is the name given by the U.S. Forest Service to a 61.3-mile stretch of roads between Almond and Highlands in North Carolina’s Nantahala National Forest.
The route goes through two river gorges, past two lakes, Wayah Bald, and Cullasaja Gorge, and ends at the beautiful Dry Falls, which is 75 feet tall and has a parking area right next to it.
Even though you can see the falls from the lookout, you should walk along the path that goes behind the falls. You won’t get wet because the cliff sticks out far enough, and the photo opportunities are amazing. One of the best waterfalls in America.
9. Wailua Falls in Kauai, Hawaii
The opening credits of the TV show Fantasy Island, which ran in the late 1970s and early 1980s, made these twin falls well-known. The double falls are at the southern end of the Wailua River.
They drop from an 80-foot cliff into a 30-foot-deep pool, and after heavy rains, they can sometimes merge into one raging cascade. (Come by in the morning to see a rainbow.)
No matter what the weather is like, you don’t need to bring hiking boots: From the visitor parking lot, which is only 15 minutes north of Kauai’s Lihue Airport, you can see this waterfall. Wailua Falls in Kauai, Hawaii is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the US.
