1. Waipio Valley Beach, Big Island

The unspoiled crescent of black sand at the bottom of Waipio Valley is by far the most secluded beach on the Big Island. It’s surrounded by cliffs that are 2,000 feet high and a three-mile hike down. Don’t let that stop you, though, because you’ll be rewarded for your hard work with fine, black sand and calm, clear turquoise water.

If you look to the east, you’ll see the beautiful Kaluahine Waterfall (shown in the picture) and the bigger Waiulili Falls, which can be reached by a rocky trail along the surf. Because it’s so far away, you’ll probably be the only one in this hidden paradise. One of the best secluded beaches in Hawaii.

2. Makapu’u Beach, Oahu

Makapu’u Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on Oahu, even though it’s only a quarter mile long. The high lava rock cliffs of Makapu’u Point are on the other side of the beach. The beach is wide and golden, and the water is cool and shimmery.

Even though it looks pretty, Makapu’u is not a good place to go swimming because it has strong rip currents and a strong shorebreak. You could say that the island of Molokai is hidden in plain sight because it is in between Hawaii’s two most popular islands. You could also say that all of the beaches on Molokai are peaceful and quiet. But what if you want to be completely alone?

Drive north to Paniolo Hale, park off Kaluakoi Road, and then walk 45 minutes down to Kawakiu, Molokai’s northernmost beach. This perfect crescent of white sand and bright blue water is paradise at its best. It is protected by kiawe trees with big, green leaves.

4. Mākua Beach, Oahu

Mākua Beach is a beautiful half-mile stretch of golden sand tucked away on Oahu’s windswept Waianae coast, far from the crowds of Waikiki. It is backed by the Waianae Mountains and the lush, empty Mākua Valley.

Because of how far away it is, the beach is almost always empty, especially on weekdays, so you can swim and sunbathe in peace. But be careful: unlike other beaches on Oahu, Mākua is not protected by an offshore reef, and there is no lifeguard on site, so stay close to the shore (or better yet, stick to the relaxing tide pools at either end of the beach).

Makalawena Beach, or “Maks” as the locals call it, is a string of white-sand coves with turquoise-blue water. It is on the quiet North Kona coast of the Big Island.

You have to walk for half an hour over lava rock to get there, but it’s worth it: the beach is always empty, there are lots of shady trees, and just a few feet offshore is a beautiful coral reef that’s great for snorkeling. Honokalani Beach in Hana is a photographer’s dream, with its black sand, turquoise water, and thick, jungle-like plants. There’s a lot to do besides just lying around on the “sand,” which is made of tiny lava pebbles.
